The South Hams Bishop's Transcripts
The Bishop's Transcripts (BTs) are copies of parish registers which were made once a year in each parish and forwarded to the Bishop of Exeter for archiving. They can be very helpful in resolving ambiguities in the register and even filling in any missing pages. However, the BTs suffer the same problems as the registers: the writing is sometimes difficult to read and several years are missing. There is also the danger that the BTs themselves may contain transcription errors, and that errors may have crept in during the archiving process. This resource should therefore be treated with the usual caution.
FamilySearch is starting to make images of extant Devon BTs available online. Provided you have already registered, you may view images of these BTs for free using the film numbers listed here. The table below indicates the film numbers for those South Hams parishes where images of the BTs up to 1812 are available. The included BTs vary from parish to parish, but generally start around 1600.
Many of the later BTs have been indexed, and presumably more and more will be in the future. To search this index, click here.
